Here’s the eight-point annual audit we walk our commercial clients through. It takes about an hour. It will likely save you more than the cost of the audit in the first year.
1. Camera Coverage Audit
Walk your property at opening time, mid-day, and after dark. Compare the actual field of view to what you intended. A surprising number of cameras end up pointing at the side of a delivery truck or the back of a sign within months of installation. Document each camera’s coverage and date the photo.
2. NVR Health Check
Pull up each NVR and check three things: hard drive health (SMART status), recording continuity (any gaps in the timeline?), and time synchronization. Hard drives in 24/7-recording commercial installations typically last three to five years. If yours is older, replace it before it fails.
3. Door Access Permissions
Export your access control user list. Cross-reference with HR’s active employee list. Terminated employees’ credentials should be deactivated within 24 hours of their last day — anything longer is a security gap. The same applies for cleaning crews, contractors, and seasonal staff.
4. Alarm Panel Test
Trigger every zone of your alarm system. Confirm each signal reaches the monitoring centre, generates the correct response (police, fire, medical), and that your escalation list is current. Update phone numbers — if your monitoring calls a former manager’s disconnected cell phone, the chain breaks.
5. Cybersecurity Hygiene
Your security system is a network device. Default passwords must be changed. Firmware should be up to date. If your CCTV or access control system is exposed to the internet, confirm it’s behind a properly configured firewall with unique credentials. We’ve seen too many Surrey businesses discover their camera feeds were indexed on the public internet.
6. After-Hours Lighting Test
Walk your property at 11pm. Note any dark zones, burned-out bulbs, or motion lights that have failed. Replace with LED fixtures — the energy savings pay for the upgrade within 18 months. Document the lighting layout so your monitoring team knows what to expect on camera.
7. Emergency Communication Plan
If the power is out for six hours, do your staff know what to do? If the alarm fires at 2am, who is the primary contact, and who is the backup? Write the plan down, share it with your staff, and review it annually. Most security failures during incidents are communication failures, not technology failures.
8. Insurance Compliance Review
Pull your commercial property insurance policy. Check the specific security requirements — many policies now mandate monitored alarms, UL-listed monitoring centres, and specific camera coverage. If you’ve made changes to your system, your insurer may need updated certificates. A failed claim because of a paperwork gap is an expensive lesson.
